Kakegawa Castle

掛川城

Shizuoka · Chubu

A hilltop wooden castle keep in Kakegawa City (western Shizuoka) reconstructed in 1994 using original Edo-period materials and methods — the first authentic wooden tenshukaku rebuild in postwar Japan; the adjoining Ninomaru Palace is one of only four surviving original castle palaces in the country.

Why we picked it

A genuinely rare all-wood castle reconstruction (not concrete, unlike most 'restored' Japanese castles) in a city almost entirely absent from Izu-heavy Shizuoka coverage; far less visited than Hamamatsu or Shizuoka City sites.
