Tsuzura Rice Terraces

つづら棚田

Fukuoka · Kyushu

Tsuzura is a bank of roughly 300 small rice paddies stacked up a valley side in the hills above Ukiha, held in place by dry-stone walls built around four centuries ago. The terraces cover about seven hectares and are still farmed, partly by townspeople who take on a paddy under an owner scheme. A single narrow lane runs up through the middle of them.

Why it's hidden

It is forty minutes into the mountains from the nearest town and carries none of the coach traffic that reaches Japan's better-known terraced valleys.
