Raizan Sennyoji Daihioin Temple

雷山千如寺大悲王院

Fukuoka · Kyushu

An ancient Buddhist temple on the slopes of Mount Raizan, home to a wooden 4.6m thousand-armed Kannon statue, 500 stone rakan disciples, and a roughly 400-year-old giant maple tree that is a designated natural monument. The grounds hold nearly 200 maples that blaze red in mid-to-late November.

Why we picked it

Famous locally for autumn colour yet off the main Kyushu temple circuit, reached only by a winding mountain road.
