Nagano · Chubu
Matsumoto's hot-spring quarter, in the hills on the north-east edge of the city — the 'inner parlour' of Matsumoto, with springs recorded for over 1,300 years and a line of inns and public baths along one slope. The water is an alkaline simple spring, colourless and clear, rising at around 50°C, so most baths run it undiluted and unheated. It is not related to Mount Asama, which is 100 km away on the Gunma border.
