Engakuji Temple (Fukaura Kannon)

円覚寺

Aomori · Tohoku

A Shingon Buddhist temple in the old port town of Fukaura, traditionally said to date to 807, enshrining an Eleven-Faced Kannon and serving as the 10th stop on the Tsugaru Thirty-Three Kannon pilgrimage. It is known for its votive offerings from seafarers, including hair-braid ema left by sailors praying for safe passage.

Why it's hidden

This centuries-old coastal Kannon temple sits a short walk from Fukaura Station yet is almost entirely overlooked by visitors focused on the Shirakami mountains and Juniko lakes.
