Kumamoto Castle

熊本城

Kumamoto · Kyushu

Kumamoto Castle was completed in 1607 and is known above all for its stone walls — steeply curved ramparts that flare outwards near the top and were built to be unclimbable. Admission to the grounds and tower is ¥800 for high-school age and up, with last admission 30 minutes before the 5:00 PM close. Allow about two hours.

Why we picked it

Despite its beauty and historical significance, many travelers focus on more famous sites like Himeji Castle, overlooking this gem.
