Kota Shrine

巨田神社

Miyazaki · Kyushu

A quiet forest shrine in Sadowara whose main hall, built in 1448, is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property and one of the very few surviving Muromachi-period shrine buildings in southern Kyushu. Two adjacent prefecturally designated halls stand beside it, and the historic Kota-kagura dance is performed at the autumn festival.

Why it's hidden

This rare medieval wooden shrine sits off the tourist trail in a residential edge of Miyazaki city, drawing almost only worshippers and architecture enthusiasts.
