Karuizawa Wild Bird Sanctuary
軽井沢野鳥の森Nagano · Chubu
The Karuizawa Wild Bird Sanctuary is about 100 hectares of chestnut, oak and larch woodland on the lower slopes of Mount Asama, crossed by roughly 3km of walking trails between 950m and 1,100m elevation. It was designated a national wild bird forest by the Environment Agency in 1974, and around 80 bird species are recorded there each year alongside Asian black bears, Japanese serow and giant flying squirrels. A visitor centre at the edge of the forest lends bear bells to walkers free of charge.
