Built in 1879 and rebuilt in its current Meiji-style wooden form in 1938, Takegawara Onsen is Beppu's oldest and most iconic public bathhouse. It offers both a standard hot-spring soaking bath and its famous sunayu sand bath, where attendants bury visitors up to the neck in naturally heated sand.
