Munakata Taisha Hetsu-gu

宗像大社辺津宮

Fukuoka · Kyushu

Mainland head shrine of Munakata Taisha (~6,000 affiliated shrines nationwide) and the visitable mainland component of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region' (2017). Houses the Shinpokan treasure hall, displaying ~80,000 National Treasure objects excavated from Okinoshima island.

Why we picked it

The mainland Hetsu-gu; the shrine most visitors actually reach since Okinoshima is inaccessible; is missing entirely.; Undisputed #1 shrine of the Munakata area.
