Miyagi · Tohoku
A roughly 300-year-old New Year fire festival held every January 14 at shrines across Miyagi, with the largest gathering at Osaki Hachimangu Shrine in Sendai. Worshippers burn the previous year's New Year decorations in a bonfire, and the event is famous for its hadaka-mairi (naked pilgrimage), in which groups clad only in loincloths march to the shrine.
