百手祭
Hiroshima · Chugoku
Held every January 20 in the forest clearing before Omoto Shrine on Miyajima, one of the island's oldest shrines. After rituals by Shinto priests, an archer fires the first arrows of the year (oyumi-shinji) toward heaven, earth, left and right, then at a target painted with the character for 'demon' (oni), symbolizing a determination to live the coming year free of conflict.
