Kurokawa Onsen Yu-Akari Bamboo Lantern Illumination

Each winter the hidden hot-spring village of Kurokawa Onsen, tucked in the Aso highlands, lines its river and lanes with hundreds of hand-crafted bamboo lanterns, in spherical 'temari' and roughly two-meter cylindrical forms, glowing from nightfall until 10pm. The warm amber light against the retro onsen streetscape has made Yu-Akari one of Kyushu's most photographed winter scenes.
