On January 3 each year, thirteen neighborhood groups from around Izumo Taisha welcome the new year with the Kitchosan procession. Bannai heralds in kimono and demon masks lead each group, flutes and taiko drums play, and towering decorated Kitcho banners are raised as villagers sing special prayer songs for health and safety through the year. A distinct folk ritual from the shrine's January 1 Saitansai.
