Around 10,000 cherry trees spanning roughly 250 varieties bloom in a month-long relay at the former Matsumae Castle grounds, Hokkaido's earliest and longest-running sakura display since the varieties peak at staggered times. It marks the unofficial start of Hokkaido's cherry blossom season each year.
