Kyoto · Kansai
A New Year's Eve fire ritual unique to Kyoto, in which okera-root herbs are burned in lantern fires at Yasaka Shrine to purify the old year's misfortune. Worshippers light lengths of bamboo rope from the sacred flame and swing them, keeping the fire alight, to carry home for the year's first hearth.
