東寺弘法市
Kyoto · Kansai
A huge antiques and flea market that fills Tōji Temple's grounds on the 21st of every month, marking the death day of Kōbō Daishi (Kūkai). Over 1,000 stalls sell antiques, secondhand kimono, old tools, and food, drawing crowds estimated at 200,000 visitors on a typical market day.
Best viewing tips
Runs roughly 07:00–15:30, rain or shine. Market entry is free; the temple's own paid halls and pagoda (separate admission) keep their own 08:00–17:00 hours if you want to combine the two. Arrive early — stalls thin out and vendors start packing by mid-afternoon.
