One of Japan's largest and most famous Setsubun (bean-throwing) ceremonies, held every February 3 at the great pilgrimage temple of Naritasan Shinshoji near Narita. Sumo wrestlers, kabuki actors and NHK Taiga-drama celebrities join priests on the Great Main Hall balcony to hurl roughly 860 kg of roasted soybeans and lucky packets to tens of thousands of visitors across three daily throws. Uniquely, the chant omits 'oni wa soto' (demons out) because the temple's deity Fudo Myo-o is believed to reform even demons.
