竹伐り会式

A ritual over 1,000 years old in which two teams of monks dressed as warrior-monks race to slice thick green bamboo, representing a slain serpent, into pieces, as a divination of the year's harvest. Held annually on 20 June at Kurama-dera in the northern mountains.
