Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridges (Niju Kazurabashi)

奥祖谷二重かずら橋

Tokushima · Shikoku

The Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridges are a pair of woven-vine suspension bridges — the larger 'husband' (Otto-bashi) and the smaller 'wife' (Tsuma-bashi) — spanning the upper Iya River deep in the mountains of eastern Tokushima. Beside them a hand-pulled 'yaen' (wild monkey) cable cart lets visitors haul themselves across the gorge in a small wooden car.

Why we picked it

Set far up the valley near the foot of Mount Tsurugi, roughly 20 km beyond the famous single Iya Kazurabashi, these twin bridges draw only a fraction of the crowds and are sealed off entirely through the winter.
