Hateruma Sugar Factory

波照間製糖株式会社

Okinawa

Japan's southernmost sugar mill, on Hateruma Island in the Yaeyama Islands, rebuilt in 2014 with roughly 130 tons/day processing capacity. During the harvest season (roughly December-April), visitors can view the process from raw cane delivery to brown-sugar output by prior arrangement.

Why it's hidden

A genuinely tourable working factory that only operates and opens seasonally, absent from most Yaeyama itinerary content outside niche factory-tour blogs.
