Okinawa

A stone-and-concrete pier built in 1938 on Taketomi Island's west coast, once used by villagers ferrying to rice paddies on Iriomote by canoe. No longer used for boat traffic, it extends over shallow turquoise water toward Iriomote and is the island's best-known sunset-viewing spot. Typhoon season runs roughly June to October, and a passing storm can cancel ferries, flights and all marine activity across the islands at a day's notice — check the forecast before you rely on this stop.

Why we picked it

Reaching it means cycling past Kondoi Beach to the island's edge and staying for sunset — most day-trippers leave on the last ferry before it's worth the walk.
