Kibougaoka Beach

希望が丘ビーチ

Okinawa

希望が丘ビーチ is a roughly 150 m natural beach on the Onna Village coast, tucked below National Route 58 next to the Halekulani hotel with no sign marking its entrance. THERE ARE NO LIFEGUARDS, AND DROWNING ACCIDENTS HAVE HAPPENED HERE: the inner reef keeps the water calm and clear enough to snorkel close to shore, but the current runs strongly beyond it, so staying inside the reef and knowing where it is matters. On a clear day Sesoko and Ie Islands are visible offshore, and the beach is a noted sunset spot. Barbecuing and camping are both allowed, unusually for an Okinawan beach — bring your own charcoal, as there are no facilities of any kind on site.

Why it's hidden

It has no sign at the top of the stairs and no facilities at the bottom — the kind of beach found only by knowing exactly which unmarked pull-in on Route 58 to stop at.
