Kihōin Shūshūkan

喜宝院蒐集館

Okinawa

A small private museum on Taketomi Island attached to Kihōin — billed as Japan's southernmost Buddhist temple — displaying roughly 3,000-4,000 everyday and ceremonial artifacts collected from Taketomi households, including farm tools, funeral implements, and the island's last surviving tax-measurement scale.

Why we picked it

An unmarked converted house on a back lane with little English signage, and closed during the Tanadui festival — bike-tour visitors routinely miss it for the photogenic red-roof streets.
