Kirosan Panorama Park

亀老山展望公園

Ehime · Shikoku

Perched at 307m on the southern tip of Oshima Island, this Kengo Kuma-designed observatory is built into the mountainside rather than on top of it, so the panorama of the triple-span Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge and the roiling straits below opens up almost without warning. It's regarded by many cyclists and photographers as the single best view on the entire Shimanami Kaido.

Why we picked it

Most Shimanami Kaido visitors stop at the roadside Kurushima Strait viewpoints near the bridge itself and never detour up the access road to this quieter, architect-designed overlook a few kilometers further on.
