赤墓ビーチ

Okinawa

赤墓ビーチ, also called Sadahama, is an unmanaged natural beach on the Motobu peninsula at Moroshi in Nakijin Village, with white sand, shallow clear water and coral close in. TWO THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU SWIM: there are no lifeguards or beach staff of any kind, and a short way offshore the bottom drops away sharply — beyond that drop-off the current runs considerably stronger, and it should be avoided. The name means 'red tomb': it comes from the plastered red tomb of Uema Oyakata, younger brother of Shō En, first king of the Ryūkyū Kingdom. It was a local beach until a K-pop music video and an NHK morning drama were filmed here, and it is busier than it was, though still quiet next to Kouri Island. Nakijin Castle Ruins, a World Heritage site, is about two kilometres away.

Why it's hidden

An unmanaged beach reached down a side road off the coast highway, with no gate and no facilities beyond a portable toilet — most visitors to the Motobu peninsula drive past it to the aquarium.
