Okinawa
海中道路 is a causeway about 5 km long running from the Katsuren peninsula out across shallow water to the islands off Okinawa's east coast, and driving it is the point: the sea is on both sides at close range, and steps down from the road put you at the water. From it you can reach four islands by car — 浜比嘉島, 平安座島, 宮城島 and 伊計島. A road park sits at the midpoint with 海の駅あやはし館, a building shaped like a マーラン船 trading vessel; its ground floor sells local produce and its upper floor holds a maritime museum that is the only place in Okinawa displaying wooden-shipbuilding and shipwright material, including a マーラン船 model designated a city cultural property. The name あやはし means 'beautiful bridge', and the causeway is lit at night.
