Unpenji Ropeway & Summit Park

雲辺寺ロープウェイ・雲辺寺山頂公園

Kagawa · Shikoku

One of Japan's largest ropeways (2,594m, 657m elevation gain, ~7 min) climbs from Kan'onji, Kagawa to the summit of Mount Unpen (920m), site of Unpenji — temple #66 of the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage and the highest-elevation temple on the route, nicknamed "Shikoku Koya." The temple grounds hold roughly 500 life-size stone Rakan (Buddhist disciple) statues, each with a distinct expression, plus the adjacent summit park's giant swing ("Tenku no Buranko") with panoramic Seto Inland Sea and Shikoku mountain views.

Why we picked it

A well-established, actively marketed pilgrimage stop — not framed as hidden, but an undisputed highlight: one of Japan's largest ropeways leading to a temple most travelers outside Japan have never heard of.

How to get there

Ropeway base station is in Onohara-cho, Kan'onji City, Kagawa, ~15 min from the Onohara Expressway exit, ~9km from JR Toyohama Station (no direct rail, local bus/taxi/car needed). The temple sits across the border in Tokushima but has no independent road access — the ropeway from the Kagawa side is the practical way in.
