Marugame Uchiwa Museum

丸亀うちわミュージアム

Kagawa · Shikoku

A hands-on museum inside the historic Nakazu Banshoen garden dedicated to Marugame uchiwa, the flat paper fans first made as souvenirs for Konpira-san pilgrims in the early Edo period — Marugame still produces roughly 90% of Japan's uchiwa today. Exhibits trace the craft's 400-year history, with artisans demonstrating bamboo-splitting and paper-pasting techniques and a workshop for visitors to make their own fan.

Why we picked it

Overshadowed by neighboring Marugame Castle and by Kotohira's pilgrimage crowds (the very tradition that created this craft), the museum — reopened at this garden site in 2023 after relocating from its original harborside building — is skipped by most day-trip itineraries.
