Takamatsu Castle

高松城

Kagawa · Shikoku

Takamatsu Castle, also called Tamamo Castle, was built in 1590 and is one of the few castles in Japan whose moat is filled with seawater drawn from the harbour beside it. The keep no longer stands — what survives is its stone base, the remaining turrets and the surrounding Tamamo Park, which costs ¥200 and opens 7:00 AM–5:00 PM.

Why we picked it

Many mainstream travelers focus on larger cities like Kyoto and Tokyo, overlooking this serene historical site.
