Ta-taki Falls

Ta-taki Falls

ター滝

Okinawa

ター滝 is a roughly 10-metre waterfall in the Yanbaru forest of Ogimi Village, reached only by trekking up the Heinan River itself — walking, wading and scrambling over moss-covered boulders rather than a maintained trail. THE RIVER CAN RISE SUDDENLY IN A DOWNPOUR: the parking lot's own guidance warns to watch the weather throughout, leave the river immediately at rain or lightning, move to high ground, and wait out any sudden rise rather than trying to cross it. The reward at the top is a wide, swimmable pool beneath the falls. Guided river-trekking tours (about 3 hours, minimum age 3) are available through several Yanbaru outdoor operators.

Why it's hidden

It has no path, no signage partway up, and no way to reach it except getting into the river itself — the walk-in is the whole reason it stays quiet against the rest of northern Okinawa's more accessible waterfalls.

How to get there

Drive to the Heinan River Ta-taki parking lot (平南川ター滝駐車場) — about 1h30 from Naha Airport via the Okinawa Expressway, or roughly 25 minutes from Kyoda Interchange. IMPORTANT: searching 'Ta-taki' by name on Google Maps can lead to the wrong location; search for the parking lot itself. From the car park it is a river-trekking approach: wading, walking and scrambling up the Heinan River for roughly an hour to reach the falls, with fixed ropes on some of the smaller cascades.
