Ryuga Cave

龍河洞

Kochi · Shikoku

Ryuga Cave is a 4-kilometer limestone cavern in Kami, Kochi Prefecture, formed roughly 175 million years ago, with about 1 km open to visitors along lit walkways past stalactites and an ancient Yayoi-period pot fused into the rock by mineral deposits. A separate caving 'adventure course' lets visitors crawl through unlit passages in overalls and helmets.

Why we picked it

Overshadowed by Shikoku's coastal capes and gorges, this cave draws a fraction of the visitors of mainland Japan's show caves despite comparable scale and a genuinely unusual archaeological feature.
