Sugi no Osugi (Great Cedar of Otoyo)

杉の大スギ

Kochi · Shikoku

A pair of fused ancient Japanese cedars within Yasaka Shrine in the mountain town of Otoyo, estimated at over 3,000 years old and designated a Special Natural Monument of Japan. Locally called 'Osugi-san,' the trees are considered a spiritual power spot.

Why we picked it

A remote mountain shrine reachable only by a winding drive, largely unknown outside Kochi despite ranking among Japan's oldest and tallest living cedars.
