Hateruma Distillery (Awanami)

波照間酒造所

Okinawa

Founded in 1950 in the village center of Hateruma Island, this is Japan's southernmost awamori distillery, producing the "Awanami" (泡波) brand at roughly 6,000 bottles a month, about 95% of which is consumed on-island. There are no public tours; bottles are sold only at an attached shop with limited hours, closed Sundays.

Why it's hidden

Called the "phantom awamori" for a reason: production is so small and locally consumed that the building itself has no prominent signage and is easy to walk past — real scarcity, not marketing hype.
