Japan's Southernmost Point Monument

日本最南端の碑

Okinawa

A self-funded concrete memorial erected in 1970 by a traveling student on Hateruma Island, marking the southernmost point of Japan accessible on an inhabited island (the true geographic extremity lies roughly 1.5km further southwest, unmarked). Two companion monuments stand beside it: a 1995 Peace Monument and a 1972 reversion memorial.

Why we picked it

Frequently mixed up in trip planning with the nearby Hateruma Star-Watching Tower (0.9km away) — they're separate structures at separate stops, and treating them as one landmark loses a genuine must-see photo stop.
