Ishigaki Island

Ishigaki is the main island of the Yaeyama group and the gateway most travellers arrive through, holding the archipelago's airport and the ferry terminal for Taketomi, Iriomote and Hateruma. Its interior is mountainous and green, its coast a mix of coral beaches and small fishing settlements, and the town around the port carries the public market, the restaurants and the island bus hub. Typhoon season runs roughly June to October, and a passing storm can cancel ferries, flights and all marine activity across the islands at a day's notice — check the forecast before you rely on this stop.
