Irabu Ohashi Bridge

伊良部大橋

Okinawa

Irabu Ohashi runs 3,540 metres from Miyakojima across to Irabu Island, which makes it the longest toll-free bridge in Japan, with shallow turquoise water on both sides for its whole length. It is free and open at all hours, and crossing it is the point — most people drive over and back in about half an hour. Typhoon season runs roughly June to October, and a passing storm can cancel ferries, flights and all marine activity across the islands at a day's notice, so check the forecast before you rely on this stop.

Why we picked it

Many travelers focus on the main islands and miss the beauty of the lesser-known Miyako Islands.
