Iriomote Island
西表島Okinawa
Iriomote is the largest of the Yaeyama islands and one of the eight islands that make up Taketomi Town, reached by ferry from Ishigaki in about an hour. Almost all of it is subtropical forest and mangrove river system inside a national park, served by a single coast road with no traffic lights, and parts of the interior may only be entered with prior approval. Typhoon season runs roughly June to October, and a passing storm can cancel ferries, flights and all marine activity across the islands at a day's notice — check the forecast before you rely on this stop.
