Kerama Islands

慶良間諸島

Okinawa

The Kerama Islands are a group of more than thirty islands and rocks about 40km west of Naha, reached by high-speed ferry from Tomari Port in roughly 35 to 50 minutes. Zamami, Aka and Tokashiki are the inhabited ones, and the water between them — protected since 2014 as Japan's thirty-first national park — is what people come for. Typhoon season runs roughly June to October, and a passing storm can cancel ferries, flights and all marine activity across the islands at a day's notice — check the forecast before you rely on this stop.

Why we picked it

Day-trippers ride out in the morning and back in the afternoon, so the islands empty in the evening and the smaller ones see almost no one.
