Yakuri-ji Temple
八栗寺Kagawa · Shikoku
Temple 85 of the Shikoku pilgrimage, perched on the western slope of the five-peaked Mount Goken and founded by Kukai in 829 — legend holds he buried eight chestnuts here that sprouted, giving the temple its name ('eight chestnuts'). A short funicular climbs through pine forest to the mountaintop precinct, which opens onto sweeping views over Yashima and the Takamatsu coastline. Best timed for autumn foliage (November) or clear winter days for long-distance views.
