Painagama Beach lies on the edge of Hirara, the main town on Miyakojima, close enough to the port to walk to in about eight minutes. It is free, ungated and open at all hours, which makes it the easiest beach on the island to reach without a car. Typhoon season runs roughly June to October, and a passing storm can cancel ferries, flights and all marine activity across the islands at a day's notice — check the forecast before you rely on this stop.
