Nagoro Scarecrow Village

Nagoro Scarecrow Village

名頃かかし村

Tokushima · Shikoku

Nagoro is a village deep in the Iya Valley where the scarecrows now outnumber the people — several hundred life-size figures, made by a resident to stand in for neighbours who died or moved away, posed at bus stops, in the fields and at the desks of a school that has no pupils left. It is free and open at all hours, but there is no rail access and no tourist infrastructure: reaching it takes roughly two hours from Oboke Station by Shikoku Kotsu bus with a local transfer.

Why we picked it

Many mainstream travelers overlook this village due to its remote location and lack of tourist infrastructure.
